SPHEREx: Mapping the Universe – An Insider's Update with Jamie Bock
Date: Thursday, March 20
Time: 5:00 p.m. (PST)
Location: Zoom
Join an exclusive Caltech Alumni virtual conversation with Jamie Bock, the Marvin L. Goldberger professor of physics at Caltech, JPL senior research scientist, and Principal Investigator of SPHEREx. As this groundbreaking NASA mission prepares to scan the entire sky spectroscopically, Bock will share how SPHEREx will collect data on more than 450 million galaxies and over 100 million stars in the Milky Way to explore the origins of the universe.
This 45-minute session features a 30-minute deep dive into the mission, followed by a 15-minute live Q&A, where you can ask questions directly to the mission’s lead scientist.
About the Speaker

Jamie Bock
James (Jamie) Bock is the Marvin L. Goldberger Professor of Physics at Caltech, a JPL Senior Research Scientist, and the Principal Investigator of the SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) satellite project. As an experimental cosmologist, his research focuses on pioneering new technologies and instruments designed for fundamental measurements of the state of our universe. Bock received his PhD from U.C. Berkeley in Physics in 1994 and a B.S. from Duke University with degrees in Physics and Mathematics. He received the Gruber Foundation Cosmology Prize as a member of the Planck team in 2018, the AAS Joseph Weber Aware for Astronomical Instrumentation in 2016 and the SPIE George W. Goddard Award in 2014. He has co-authored over 800 scientific papers, mainly focused on technology, astronomy, and cosmology.
