Alan Stearns
Alan Stearns passed away in Avalon on July 14 at the age of 98. He was born in Buffalo, New York and during the Great Depression, his family moved to Glendale, California where he lived until graduating from Glendale High School in 1943. He attended college at USC and CalTech where he graduated from the V-12 program with a degree in electrical engineering. He became an entrepreneur and owned and operated several companies, some of which served the aviation and defense industries.
Alan met Betty Brown at USC and they were married in 1949. In 1965, they came to Avalon, purchasing a home on Claressa Street where they spent the summers with their children, Laura and Ralph. In 1978, they built their dream home on Hill Street.
Alan was an avid tennis player, a longtime member of the Catalina Racquet Club, and also enjoyed golfing, boating and fishing.
After a long illness, Betty passed away in 1985. Alan was also predeceased by two other partners, Farah Stearns and Petie Kramer. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Volger (husband Bob), son Ralph Stearns (wife Keiko), six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
