KARACHI: The 49th Independence Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm
and fervour in city and other parts of Sindh like in other parts of the
country. It dawned with a 21-gun-salute by the Naval batteries while
special prayers were offered for peace in city and prayers for progress
and prosperity of the country.
Sindh Governor Kamaluddin Azfar and Chief Minister, Syed Abdullah Shah
hoisted national flag at the mausoleum of the Quaid-e-Azam while Sindh
ministers, advisers and other leaders and the city elite were also
present. The Governor and CM laid floral wreaths at the Mazaar and
offered Fateha. Programme of speeches, national songs and contests,
organised by city administration, Directorate of School Education were
also organised at the mausoleum.
Talks to be separated from terrorism: PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto while reiterating her dialogue
offer to all political parties and groups vowed to separate politics
from crime and terrorism.
In her address at the Independence Day ceremony held in front of
Parliament House on Monday, she said: "To end politics of terror, the
people's government has declared to separate crime from politics and
terrorism from dialogue. We are political people and believe in
political solutions." She said political solutions were based on 'give
and take' and on compromise not on dictation.
KARACHI: Terrorists' strikes marred the Independence Day celeberations
as 13 people, including a member of the Naval band, were gunned down on
Monday while four people fell victims to terrorists on Tuesday.
Babar holds Altaf responsible for Independence day killings
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Naseerullah Babar said on Tuesday that
although Fahim Commando had been arrested, his accomplices were still at
large and involved in terrorism. Talking to journalists at Parliament
House , Babar put the blame of 14 deaths on the Independence Day on
Altaf Hussain, adding this showed what love he had for the people of
Karachi.
Altaf holds govt responsible for killing on August 14 KARACHI: The MQM
chief, Altaf Hussain, has condemned the killing of several innocent
people on Independence Day and held the government and its agencies
responsible for the act.
ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Sardar Assef Ahmed Ali on Tuesday expressed
strong resentment at the unwarranted and false accusations made against
Pakistan by the Indian Prime Minister P.V Narashima Rao during his
address on the occasion of India's Independence Day.
The assertions of the Indian prime minister regarding Pakistan's alleged
responsibility for the murder of a Norwegian tourist in held Kashmir
were not only baseless but highly irresponsible, Assef said in a
statement issued here.
LONDON: British Kashmiris' held a protest rally in front of the Indian
High Commission here on India's Independence Day.
Organised by the All Party Kashmir Coordination Committee, the
demonstration was joined by Kashmiris from all over the UK. The rally
was led by Chaudhry Allah Ditta Chairman Kashmir Coordination Committee,
Ayub Thukar, President World Kashmir Freedom Movement and other Kashmiri
leaders.
PESHAWAR: As a lashkar of armed tribesmen began march on Bara tehsil of
the Khyber Agency, the paramilitary Frontier Corps in the third phase of
its ongoing operation demolished the headquarters of Tanzim
Ittehad-i-Ulema Wa Aqwam-i-Qabail, eight km to the west of Peshawar.
LAHORE: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mian Nawaz
Sharif on Monday directed his party workers to complete the party
reorganisation at district level by September 1, 1995, and at primary
level by October 1, 1995.
Addressing a convention of the PML-N at the Davis Road here, Nawaz
congratulated party workers for celebrating nation's 48th Independence
Day and added that his party had emerged as a major political force
which should be reorganised at the grass-root level to meet internal and
external challenges being confronted by the nation.
ISLAMABAD: President Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari has conferred the award
of the Quaid-i-Azam Police Medals (QPM) and the President's Police
Medals (PPM) on the members of the police force for act of gallantry
performed by them in the discharge of their duties.
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Manzoor Wattoo has said that his
coalition government has adopted primary measures to change the existing
electoral system, so that everybody desiring to contest the elections
could participate in the process.
ISLAMABAD: Farooq Sumar has appealed to President Farooq Ahmad Khan
Leghari to bear upon the government to take action against MQM (Haqiqi)
and its Chairman Afaq Ahmad Khan for harassing him and his family.
In his letter addressed to president, Sumar has alleged that Sindh
government continues to patronise `Afaq Ahmed's terrorists' despite HRCP
and FIA's inquiry reports which hold him responsible for acts of
harassment. In this respect, the letter adds that his arrest orders
issue by the interior ministry were rescinded at the personal
intervention of the Sindh chief minister.
KARACHI: The Sindh PPP President Syed Qaim Ali Shah declared that the
Karachi was a strong citadel of the country and would remain so, as the
people of the city cannot even think of anything like separation in any
way.
He was talking to a group of newsmen on Tuesday at a at a lunch he feted
to the city journalists. The other party leaders Rashid Rabbani, Habib
Junedi, Waqar Mehdi, Iftikhar Hussain, Siddiqe Abu Bhai and others were
also present on the occasion.
