Frequently Asked Questions about volunteering for the Alumni Association:
Q: Do I have to live near Caltech to volunteer?
A: Absolutelty not! While we have some activities that need Los Angeles area volunteers, the majority of our volunteer activities don't require you to live in any one particular city! You can contact prospective students, host an event in your city, help plan a reunion and much more... all from the comfort of your own backyard!
Q: Am I signing up to volunteer forever?
A: Absolutely not! While we love our long standing volunteers, we know that your life ebbs and flows as your family grows, career changes or new adventures come your way. We would love to have you volunteer even once every five years if that's all your schedule allows.
Q: Do I get reimbursed for expenses related to an event I plan?
A: If you plan a regional event in your city, the Alumni Association covers the cost of the event. As you plan the event, the CAA staff will help you determine the appropriate spending level relative to the type and size of your event. While we likely won't be paying for a private yacht to serve a handful of alumni lobster at sunset, you'll find that we've sponsored baseball games, outdoor symphonic concerts, casual group dinners, bbq picnics, speaker series dinners and more. If you can dream of it we can help figure out the right cost, venue and marketing plan.
Q: What about other expenses like phone calls?
A: While we appreciate that you are spending valuable time and money following up on potential logistics and attendees, we don't reimburse phone calls or other small administrative costs simply because of the valuable accounting time that such small charges create for the CAA staff. If you will be hosting long distance phone calls for reunion planning meetings, the CAA can provide you with free conference call dial-in information.
